![]() ![]() For in the meantime a dragon had set up its nest at the base of the tree, the Zu-bird had placed his young in its crown, and in its midst the demoness Lilith had built her house.” Wearing heavy armor, brave Gilgamesh kills the dragon, causing the Zu-bird to fly to the mountains and a terrified Lilith to flee “to the desert.” One of the villains is Lilith: “Inanna, to her chagrin, found herself unable to realize her hopes. Inanna’s plans are nearly thwarted, however, when a dastardly triumvirate possesses the tree. In her garden near the Euphrates River, Inanna lovingly tends a willow ( huluppu) tree, the wood of which she hopes to fashion into a throne and bed for herself. a In one episode, “after heaven and earth had separated and man had been created,” 3 Gilgamesh rushes to assist Inanna, goddess of erotic love and war. The mighty ruler Gilgamesh is the world’s first literary hero he boldly slays monsters and vainly searches for the secret to eternal life. The earliest surviving mention of Lilith’s name appears in Gilgamesh and the Huluppu-Tree, a Sumerian epic poem found on a tablet at Ur and dating from approximately 2000 B.C.E. The ardat lilī is a sexually frustrated and infertile female who behaves aggressively toward young men. Her breasts are filled with poison, not milk. The lilītu dwells in desert lands and open country spaces and is especially dangerous to pregnant women and infants. The ancient name “Lilith” derives from a Sumerian word for female demons or wind spirits-the lilītu and the related ardat lilǐ. Yet, in her every guise, Lilith has cast a spell on humankind. In most manifestations of her myth, Lilith represents chaos, seduction and ungodliness. An annual music festival that donates its profits to battered women’s shelters and breast cancer research institutes is called the Lilith Fair. Her name appears as the title of a Jewish women’s magazine and a national literacy program. Modern feminists celebrate her bold struggle for independence from Adam. “Her enchanted hair,” he wrote, “was the first gold.” 1 Irish novelist James Joyce cast her as the “patron of abortions.” 2 Later, her beauty would captivate the English poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti. In the Renaissance, Michelangelo portrayed Lilith as a half-woman, half-serpent, coiled around the Tree of Knowledge. In the Middle Ages she reappears in Jewish sources as the dreadful first wife of Adam. She makes a solitary appearance in the Bible, as a wilderness demon shunned by the prophet Isaiah. Lilith next migrated to the world of the ancient Hittites, Egyptians, Israelites and Greeks. Her dark origins lie in Babylonian demonology, where amulets and incantations were used to counter the sinister powers of this winged spirit who preyed on pregnant women and infants. Image: Courtesy of Richard Callner, Latham, NY.įor 4,000 years Lilith has wandered the earth, figuring in the mythic imaginations of writers, artists and poets. In the accompanying article, Janet Howe Gaines traces the evolution of Lilith. In recent years, Lilith has undergone another transformation as modern feminists retell her story. Lilith’s character was not created out of whole cloth, however the medieval authors drew on ancient legends of the winged lilītu-a seductive, murderous demoness known from Babylonian mythology. Artist Callner identifies the large figure (right of center) as Lilith. When Adam insisted she play a subservient role, Lilith grew wings and flew away from Eden. According to medieval Jewish tradition, Lilith was Adam’s first wife, before Eve. Winged spirits tumble across the night sky in New York artist Richard Callner’s “Lovers: Birth of Lilith” (1964), now in a private collection. ![]() ![]() PaintShop Pro 2023 Manage window You can use the Manage window simply to browse the folders on your computer. In PaintShop Pro 2023 it’s now been ‘integrated’ as the After Shot Lab (though it still runs in a separate window), so that you can open a RAW file from the Manage window, make your changes and have it opened in the Edit window for regular editing. After Shot is Corel’s RAW processing, organizing and editing tool, which previously operated separately to PaintShop Pro but was needed for more advanced RAW tools. ![]() In between, if you’re working on RAW files, is the After Shot Lab. The Manage window is where you browse, organize, search and tag your images, while the Edit window is the photo editing mode. In the Complete workspace, PaintShop Pro 2023 has two windows: Manage and Edit. I’m using the free 30-day trial version, hence the ‘Purchase’ button on the toolbar, but it’s not restricted in any way. PaintShop Pro 2023 can be used in Simplified and Photography modes, but I’m reviewing the Complete mode which makes all the tools available. The PaintShop Pro 2023 workflow PaintShop Pro 2023 tries to simplify things with ‘Photography’ and ‘Essentials’ workspaces, but for the real tools you need the ‘Complete’ mode. The Ultimate edition sounds great value, then, but it includes a lot of stuff you might not want or need which comes with its own separate installers.įor this review, I’m just looking at PaintShop Pro 2023 itself, to see how it stacks up in today’s photo editing market and who it might be aimed at. The standard edition costs £69.99/$79.99 and the Ultimate bundle above adds just £20/$20, taking the price up to £89.99/$99.99. These extras include MultiCam Capture 2.0 Lite, which is a kind of video creation tool (I haven’t tried it), 50 free fonts, Painter Essentials 8 (a cut-down but still useful version of the full Painter package), PhotoMirage Express for animating still images (it’s a bit of fun), a Highlight Reel for automated slideshow and movie creation, a Sea to Sky workspace for enhancing aerial or underwater shots, and a Corel Creative Collection containing brushes, textures and over 100 royalty free backgrounds. PaintShop Pro 2023 Ultimate is actually the same as the regular PaintShop Pro 2023, but bundled with a whole lot more extras, in true Corel style. PaintShop Pro is one of the longest running photo editors for Windows users, starting life years ago as a shareware tool and then evolving first with JASC software and now Corel, into a broad-based image editing suite. Is it worth upgrading to PaintShop Pro 2023?. I received a final production unit, though, without the retail packaging. So – with that intro, let’s get into things. Also, because the technology world constantly changes, I try and go back and update these reviews as new features and functionality are added – or if bugs are fixed. But, if I’ve missed something or if you spot something that doesn’t quite jive – just let me know and I’ll be happy to get it all sorted out. I write these reviews because I’m inherently a curious person with a technology background, and thus I try and be as complete as I can. Lastly, at the end of the day keep in mind I’m just like any other regular athlete out there.
